Kaua'i Half Marathon M60-64: Hopkins Runs Away With It

• Paul Hopkins (63, Honolulu) won the M60-64 group in 1:46:43 — an 8:08/mi average that left the field in his wake.
• Ross Roussel finished 2nd in 1:52:20, nearly six minutes back, with Michael Henry (3rd, 1:54:02) and Henryk Rybka (4th, 1:54:57) bunched within two and a half minutes of each other behind him.
• Cameron Hope and Jed Sherwindt (13th and 14th) finished in 2:33:50 and 2:33:51 respectively — one second separating them after 13.1 miles.
• 30 men ages 60–64 finished, with the field spread across nearly 67 minutes from first to 20th place.

Paul Hopkins made this one look authoritative. Running 8:08 per mile through 77°F humidity on Kauai's coast, he steadily moved through the men's field over the course of the race — tracking from 86th among the men at the first checkpoint all the way up to 65th by the finish. His closing leg was his sharpest move: he posted the 49th-fastest split on the 11.05-mile-to-finish stretch among the men, a surge that put the result beyond any doubt.

Behind Hopkins, the real drama played out between Roussel, Henry, and Rybka. Roussel held 2nd comfortably, running 8:34/mi to finish in 1:52:20. Henry (8:42/mi, 1:54:02) and Rybka (8:46/mi, 1:54:57) were close enough to keep things interesting — Henry moved steadily through the men's field across all three segments, while Rybka actually slipped a few spots in the second half before steadying. Danny Guerpo rounded out the top five in 1:57:25, making his move on the middle segment before fading slightly in the back half.

Steven Berrick of London checked in 6th at 2:01:40, and then the field stretched out considerably — Mathew Happach (7th, 2:15:45) through the remainder of the top 20 covering a wide range of paces. The closest finish of the day came near the back of the listed field, where Cameron Hope and Jed Sherwindt — representing Victoria, BC and Santa Monica, CA respectively — crossed in 2:33:50 and 2:33:51, a single second apart after 13.1 miles of racing in the Kauai heat.
