M50-54: Capelli Runs Away from the Field in Napa

The 52-year-old from El Dorado Hills ran a steady 6:17/mi along the Silverado Trail point-to-point course and never relinquished his standing at the front of the M50-54 field. He moved between 12th and 14th among all men through the checkpoints, and then delivered the 11th-fastest men's second-half split in the entire field — meaning he was still pressing hard deep into the race. His 2:44:53 winning margin of 12 minutes and 37 seconds over Ito was decisive.

Kei Ito, 50, out of San Jose, ran the opposite kind of race — starting conservatively and building. His 6.2M–13.1M segment was among the sharpest in the men's field, and he steadily climbed from 48th among men at the opening checkpoint all the way to 36th by the finish, securing 2nd in 2:57:30 at 6:46/mi. Alan Zhu, 54, from Saratoga, was the biggest mover of the day: he entered the final stretch ranked 114th among men and finished 88th, posting a strong 20M-to-finish split to claim 3rd in 3:09:55. Dave Braden ran the inverse arc — 69th among men early, fading to 93rd by the end — but still held 4th in 3:11:10.

The battle for the minor places produced one of the day's tightest finishes. Hochster (Piedmont, CA) and Szeto (Sparks, NV) crossed in identical displayed times of 3:19:15, with timing precision separating them into 6th and 7th. Rehkopf (Menlo Park, CA) was just one second behind in 3:19:16 for 8th. Seventy-seven men finished in M50-54 in total, and the field stretched all the way back through Scott Bubier (9th, 3:21:27) and Tetsuya Yoshida (10th, 3:25:38) — a deep, competitive group on a cool, fast morning in Napa.
