Rocket City Marathon 10K — F30-34: Barton edges out a tight battle at the front

• Leigh Barton (Travelers Rest, SC) won the F30-34 age group in 7:51:41, averaging 75:55/mi.
• The top four finished within 8:53 of each other — a closely contested front pack across 18 finishers.
• Places 11 and 12 — Yvonne Rieke and Rebekah Thebo — finished just 5 seconds apart on the clock, with Rieke edging ahead on timing.
• The gap from 1st to 18th spanned just over 50 minutes, with the field spread across a warm, humid December morning in Huntsville.

Leigh Barton made the trip from Travelers Rest, South Carolina pay off, claiming the F30-34 title in 7:51:41. Christina Swieda of Independence, Kentucky was right behind her — 3 minutes and 45 seconds back at 7:55:26 — and local runner Breeann Campbell of Huntsville rounded out the podium at 7:57:52. Three women, three different states, separated by just over two minutes.

The battle for fourth was nearly as close. Megan Demeter (Atlanta, GA) crossed in 8:00:34, less than three minutes behind Campbell, while Caitlin Viola Shackelford and Kathleen Gillen — both finishing between 8:06 and 8:09 — kept the pressure on through the middle of the pack. The 60°F air with 85% humidity wasn't exactly fast-weather conditions, which makes the density of that front cluster all the more notable.

Further back, the race produced one of its sharpest micro-battles between Yvonne Rieke (Smithfield, KY) and Rebekah Thebo (Birmingham, AL). Both recorded 8:14 on the clock, but Thebo's official place came in 12th to Rieke's 11th — meaning Rieke got there first by the slimmest of margins the timing system could detect. Five seconds covered 9th through 12th place, a stretch of racing that clearly had no easy moments.

Emily Littlejohn of Mooreville, Mississippi closed out the 18-woman field in 8:42:21 — a solid finish in its own right on a humid December day in Alabama.
