M40-44: Bains Edges a Three-Way Thriller at Rocket City 10K

David Bains made the most of a warm, muggy December morning in Huntsville — 60°F and 85% humidity is no gift for distance runners — to claim the M40-44 title at a 74:08 per-mile average. The margin was slender: Paul Escajadillo was just 12 seconds back, and Jonathan Kline another 6 seconds behind him. Three men, all age 40, separated by less than a quarter minute across a 10K. That's as tight as it gets.

What makes Escajadillo's and Kline's performances particularly striking is that neither was running the 10K cold. Escajadillo had already placed 2nd among the men in the 5K earlier in the weekend, and Kline had gone 7th among the men in that same race. Both then turned around and nearly topped their age group in the 10K — Escajadillo finishing 2nd, Kline 3rd. Racing and placing across two events in the same meet is a genuine feat, and these two wore it well.

Scott Sandlin held 4th in 7:44:17, a comfortable gap back from the lead trio but well clear of the chase pack behind him. Josh Cauthon (5th, 7:51:47) and Zack Penney (6th, 7:53:20) kept things interesting in the middle of the field, separated by just 93 seconds. At the back, Alex Allen closed out the 12-man M40-44 field in 8:24:14 — nearly 44 minutes behind Bains, a reminder of just how wide the competitive spread can be even in a single age group on a humid Alabama morning.
