Rocket City Marathon F45-49: Melissa Butler Runs Down the Field for the Win

• Butler wins in 3:22:46 (7:44/mi), climbing from 23rd among women at the 10K to 15th by the finish — the 14th-fastest women's split on the 31K-to-finish stretch sealed it.
• Kateryna Moisyeyeva ran the 12th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-half segment, peaking at 15th among women at the halfway mark before settling for 2nd in F45-49 in 3:24:52.
• The gap from 1st to 2nd is 2:06 — comfortable at the line, but both Butler and Moisyeyeva were well clear of 3rd-place Andrea Erb (3:39:18), who herself edged Wendi Culver by just 28 seconds for the final podium spot.
• 45 women finished in the F45-49 age group, with the top 20 ranging from 3:22:46 to 4:18:01 — a spread of nearly 56 minutes across that slice of the field.

Conditions at Rocket City were not fast-day friendly — 70°F with 76% humidity and a 17 mph wind — which makes Butler's 7:44/mi average all the more impressive. She was running in the mid-20s among women for much of the early race, sitting 23rd at the 10K checkpoint, but she was clearly saving something. By the halfway mark she had nudged up to 18th among women, and she kept pressing, reaching 15th by the finish. That late-race surge, one of the stronger closing splits in the women's field, was the engine of her victory.

Moisyeyeva took the opposite approach — she went out fast. Her 10K-to-half split was among the sharpest in the entire women's race, and she was running 15th among women at the midpoint. The second half proved harder to sustain, and she slipped a few spots in the women's field, but her early investment was enough to hold 2nd in the age group by a clear margin.

The battle for 3rd was the closest fight on the podium. Erb (3:39:18) and Culver (3:39:46) were separated by just 28 seconds after 26.2 miles, with Erb also posting the 28th-fastest women's closing split to help secure her spot. Culver, running out of Birmingham, was never far behind — she held 47th among women from the half all the way to the 31K mark before Erb pulled clear in the final stretch. Laura Porter rounded out the top five in 3:41:28, making it three women within two minutes for places 3 through 5.
