San Francisco Half Marathon: Mahelly Ferreira Claims F40-44 in Dominant Fashion

Mahelly Ferreira ran away from the F40-44 field from the gun. She came through the early miles as high as 7th among all women, and while she gradually settled back through the women's field as the race wore on — sitting 31st among women at the finish — her 7:49/mi pace was in a class of its own in this group. Her 22nd-fastest women's split on the 6.43M–8.3M stretch showed she was pressing hard through the middle miles, and no one in F40-44 came close to matching her overall effort. The 2:42 gap she built over runner-up Carol Sun was decisive.

The real drama of the race played out behind her. Jill McCarthy of Oakland ran one of the most consistent races in the field — she sat 44th among women at 2.2 miles and was still 47th at the finish, barely moving. That steadiness earned her 3rd in 1:45:30. Carol Sun and Caroline Rhude told a very different story: both were charging hard in the final miles. Sun, who was 76th among women early on, climbed all the way to 45th by the finish, clocking the 30th-fastest women's split from 11.45M to the line. Rhude was even more dramatic — she started 150th among women and finished 49th, posting the 29th-fastest women's closing split. That late surge wasn't quite enough to catch McCarthy, but it did leapfrog Sun: Rhude finished 4th in 1:45:48, just 17 seconds behind Sun's 1:45:13.

Rita Mauleon rounded out the top five in 1:49:29, though her race moved in the opposite direction — she faded from 48th among women at 2.2 miles all the way back to 86th by the finish. Behind her, Annette Ferretty (6th, 1:50:28), Irma Pena (7th, 1:50:51), and Mercedes Callaci (8th, 1:51:44) filled out a competitive top ten in a field where the top 20 were all separated by just over 16 minutes.
