San Francisco Half Marathon: Jing Chen rules the F50-54 field

Jing Chen of Monte Vista, CA, made it look controlled from the gun. She held 53rd among women through the early miles, then steadily reeled in the broader women's field — reaching 39th by the 8.3-mile mark before settling to 41st at the finish. Her 8:00/mi average was a full ten seconds per mile faster than anyone else in the top five, and her 34th-fastest women's split on the 6.43M→8.3M stretch showed she was still pressing hard through the race's middle miles. The result: a comfortable 2:10 margin over second place in a 132-finisher F50-54 field.

The battle for second and third was genuinely tight. Abbe Steel (Arlington, VA) ran 1:47:05 at 8:10/mi, and Betsy Myers (Chattanooga, TN) was just 16 seconds behind her at 1:47:21. Myers was the more aggressive early runner — she posted the 38th-fastest women's split between miles 2.2 and 5.7 and sat 39th among women at the 5.7-mile checkpoint — but Steel's strong closing stretch, where she ran the 56th-fastest women's split from 11.45M to the finish, was enough to hold her off. Fourth-place Michelle Lebow (1:48:26) came from even deeper, moving from 171st among women at the first checkpoint to 74th by the finish line.

Perhaps the most eye-catching sub-plot unfolded further back in the field. Traci Brown (Spokane, WA) started 172nd among women and ran her way to 98th by the end — a gain of 74 places in the women's field — finishing 5th in 1:50:36. And in the battle for 14th through 16th, Helga Wagenhofer, Eleonora Hirk, and Gertrud Streitberger — all from the Austrian Alps — crossed within three seconds of one another, at 2:05:55, 2:05:56, and 2:05:58 respectively, capping a memorable afternoon on the San Francisco streets.
