M30-34 Half Marathon: Garcia pulls clear for a 1:25:48 victory

• Josh Garcia (Foster City, CA) won M30-34 in 1:25:48 (6:33/mi), moving from 23rd to 14th among the men across the race and closing with the 14th-fastest final-segment split in the men's field.
• Tom Whitehead (London) and Tony Li (Philadelphia) rounded out the podium in 1:26:42 and 1:26:56 respectively — separated by just 14 seconds, with Li posting the 11th-fastest men's split on the 10.54M→11.05M segment.
• Colin and Sean McIntyre — both of Berkeley, CA — finished 6th and 7th in 1:30:22 and 1:30:23, one second apart after 13.1 miles.
• Eric Lau and Cory Munsch both clocked 1:34:36 (7:13/mi) for 10th and 11th place — the places differ, meaning one edged the other by the narrowest of margins at the line.

Josh Garcia ran the kind of race that gets better as it goes. Starting the day 23rd among the men, he worked his way steadily through the field and cracked the top 15 by the back half, finishing 14th among all men at the line. His 6:33/mi average was the class of M30-34, and his strong closing leg — the 14th-fastest men's split on the 11.05M-to-finish stretch — confirmed he had plenty left when it mattered most.

Behind Garcia, Tom Whitehead and Tony Li ran a compelling duel for the podium. Mateo Saenz (Redwood City, CA) crossed 4th in 1:28:14, with Randy Han (Arcadia, CA) 5th in 1:29:41 after posting the 28th-fastest men's split on the early 1.81M→5.34M segment.

One of the day's more charming footnotes: Berkeley residents Colin and Sean McIntyre — presumably well acquainted — ran virtually in lockstep for 13.1 miles and finished 6th and 7th in 1:30:22 and 1:30:23. One second. Thirteen miles. Meanwhile, Shunya Tamada (Aichi, Japan) wrapped up a busy San Francisco weekend, having placed 6th among the men in Saturday's 5K before returning to run 19th in M30-34 here in 1:37:11 — two races, two results, one trip across the Pacific.
