San Francisco Half Marathon F65-69: Mannix edges out a thriller at the front

• Eileen Mannix (Yardley, PA) wins in 2:09:46 (9:54/mi), holding off Kathy Hruby by just 52 seconds
• Kathy Hruby (Castle Rock, CO) finishes 2nd in 2:10:38; Karen Mahakian (Frisco, CO) is 3rd in 2:10:50 — all three separated by just 64 seconds
• The top three ran the 8M–9.6M segment among the faster women in the field: Mannix posted the 278th-fastest split there, Hruby the 344th, Mahakian the 451st
• Béatrice Porcher (Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire) rounds out the top five in 2:19:45, having climbed dramatically through the women's field from 1,155th place to 925th by the finish

The F65-69 race was decided at the very front, where three women ran within 64 seconds of each other over 13.1 miles in San Francisco's cool, breezy morning air. Eileen Mannix set the pace at 9:54/mi and, crucially, was the strongest of the trio on the 8M–9.6M stretch — her 278th-fastest women's split there outpaced both Hruby and Mahakian on that segment. She crossed in 2:09:46 to claim the win.

Kathy Hruby gave chase the entire way. Her gender place tells an interesting story — she slipped back slightly in the middle miles before clawing forward again, finishing 2nd in 2:10:38. Karen Mahakian, the 69-year-old from Frisco, CO, ran the most consistently positioned race of the three, hovering near the mid-500s to mid-600s in the women's field throughout. Her 2:10:50 earned her 3rd, just 12 seconds behind Hruby and 1:04 off the win.

Fourth place went to Theresa Burst (Birmingham, AL) in 2:16:06 — a clear step back from the lead trio but a solid 10:23/mi effort. Béatrice Porcher delivered perhaps the most eye-catching trajectory of the day: the French runner from Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire started well back in the women's field but ran herself steadily forward, finishing 5th in 2:19:45. Behind her, a field of 30 spread across a wide range of finishing times, with Joanna Deredita (San Francisco, CA) 6th in 2:28:09 and Kimberly Burstein (Los Angeles, CA) 20th in 2:49:40, with ten more finishers beyond her completing the group.
