San Francisco Half Marathon M55-59: Garcia Leads a Sharp Podium Through the Fog

Oscar Garcia made his win look earned, not given. Starting the race around 100th among men, the 58-year-old from Fort Lauderdale worked his way forward checkpoint by checkpoint — 102nd, then 97th, 88th, 86th — before breaking into the top 80 men by the finish line. Running at 7:12 per mile through 59°F San Francisco air and a 14 mph wind off the Bay, Garcia had the composure to keep climbing while others held or faded.

Right behind him, Juan Bautista Aparicio Parra of Melilla ran a remarkably similar race in shape if not quite in pace. The 55-year-old also surged through the men's field — from 88th to 82nd — finishing in 1:34:39, just 19 seconds back. His 7:13/mi average was close to Garcia's, but those 19 seconds were real and decisive. David Fu, 59, of Sunnyvale rounded out the podium in 1:35:09 at 7:16/mi, making his move late — his strongest relative segment coming on the 12M-to-finish stretch, where he posted the 77th-fastest women's-field split on that leg.

Marcus Meier (1:44:12, 7:57/mi) and Xuejun Xu (1:44:51) opened up a different tier entirely, with Meier posting the 202nd-fastest split among women on the second half — a strong close that helped him hold off Xu by 39 seconds. Mike Ranieri (1:45:12) and Oswaldo Rodriguez (1:46:22) kept the middle of the M55-59 field competitive, while Jeffrey Doinoff (1:50:50) and Ryujiro Tsuchihashi (1:50:56) — both San Franciscans — finished just six seconds apart in 9th and 10th.
