San Francisco Half Marathon F70-74: Bushman dominates as five women over 70 conquer the city

Karen Bushman ran this one from the front and never looked back. Her gender place among the women's field tells the story: she drifted back through the mid-race miles as the course did its work, but she was already so far ahead of her F70-74 rivals that it never mattered. At 12:17/mi across 13.1 miles in 59°F and a stiff 14 mph wind off the Bay, Bushman's 2:40:57 was a commanding performance — nearly 11 minutes faster than anyone else in the group.

Barbara Wessen Chang (73) ran a composed, measured race. Her gender place barely moved from checkpoint to checkpoint — hovering in the 2,380–2,430 range for most of the back half — a sign of consistent pacing rather than dramatic swings. She secured 2nd in 2:51:53. Mia Wilson (71) was similarly steady, her gender standing actually improving through the final miles as she picked off runners late, and her 10M–10.5M segment was her sharpest stretch of the day. Wilson crossed in 2:57:47 for 3rd.

The real drama played out at the back of the field, where Michelle Ball and Janet Green spent the entire race within striking distance of each other. Ball (70, Idaho Falls) held the edge throughout, but Green (72, Courtenay BC) made her move on the 8M–9.6M stretch — where both runners posted their standout splits — and kept the gap tight all the way to the finish. Ball held on for 4th in 3:02:31; Green finished 5th in 3:03:58, just 87 seconds back. For five women aged 70 to 73 finishing a half marathon on the hills of San Francisco, that's a story worth telling on its own.
