The conditions at Virginia Beach were no gift — 71°F, 73% humidity, and a 17 mph wind made a sub-2:50 effort genuinely hard work. Cawood and Carrigan ran side by side in every meaningful sense: same average pace, same finish-line clock to within a few ticks, and both spending the back half of the race trading places in the men's field before Cawood ultimately settled at 8th among men and Carrigan at 9th. Five seconds across 26.2 miles is as close as it gets without sharing a podium step.

Pearson took third in 2:49:31, having surged through the 10K–15K stretch with one of the sharpest splits in the entire field on that segment. He was running in 6th among men at the halfway mark before gradually settling back to 10th, suggesting a front-loaded effort that still held together well enough for a sub-2:50 finish. The 84-second gap between him and Carrigan, though, meant the real drama was always between the top two.

The most compelling sub-plot belonged to Kevin Jackson. Starting the race back in 29th among men, he ran a disciplined, progressive race — 22nd at 5K, 19th at 10K, 16th at 15K, 12th at the finish — and backed it up with the 6th-fastest split in the field on the final push from 25.2 miles to the line. His 2:50:17 landed him 4th in M25-29, just 46 seconds off the podium. Jonathan Smith rounded out the top five in 2:50:42, keeping the entire lead pack within 2:35 of each other — a tight, competitive finish to a tough day on the Virginia Beach roads.
