Melanie Hennis, 62, of Portsmouth, ran away with the F60-64 race from the gun. She entered the 15K-to-20K stretch holding 114th place among the women and posted the 114th-fastest women's split on that segment — a sign she was running a disciplined, even effort. Her 8:48/mi average held up through 71°F heat, a stiff 17 mph wind, and 73% humidity, and she crossed in 3:50:33 — a commanding wire-to-wire performance in the age group.

Behind her, Susan Sheets of Virginia Beach ran a solid 4:16:52 but showed signs of the conditions catching up: she slipped from 216th among women at the 5K to 264th by the half, then steadied through the finish. Candelaria Drake (4:38:58) and Sheila Reinken (4:44:26) traded punches for 3rd and 4th. Drake was the stronger half-to-25K runner, posting the 315th-fastest women's split on that stretch, but Reinken had the better late-race legs — she was 360th among women early on and gradually clawed her way to 322nd by the 30K before the final miles took their toll.

The 6th-through-8th finishers — Nicholas, Weiner, and Fogel — ran nearly identical races, separated by just 90 seconds across 26.2 miles in those conditions. The back of the field reflected how brutal the day was: Kathy Wiechec, Debra Cheng, Nancy White, and Susan McAuliffe all finished between 5:45 and 7:00, a testament to sheer determination on a warm, windy Virginia Beach afternoon.
