M45-49 Marathon: Livesey Dominates in the Virginia Beach Heat

• Ben Livesey won the M45-49 group in 2:34:45 (5:54/mi), finishing more than 15 minutes clear of runner-up Adam Watkins.

With 71°F, 73% humidity, and a 17 mph wind off the Virginia Beach coast, conditions were genuinely punishing — which makes Ben Livesey's 2:34:45 all the more striking. The 46-year-old from Virginia Beach held 2nd among men from the very first checkpoint and never let it slip, posting the fastest men's split on the 10K–15K segment and sustaining a 5:54/mi clip across all 26.2 miles. No one in the M45-49 field came close to threatening him.

Behind Livesey, the story was one of patient, progressive racing. Adam Watkins (2:49:44) and John Hitter (2:52:22) both worked their way through the men's field across the second half of the race. Watkins moved from 20th to 11th among men overall, with his 6th-fastest 30K–35K split among men signaling a strong late surge. Hitter tracked a nearly identical arc — 21st to 14th — and his 11th-fastest split on that same stretch helped him hold off Watkins for 2nd in M45-49 by nearly three minutes.

Eric Miller and Pat O'Malley told the most dramatic stories of the day from a positional standpoint. Miller climbed from 97th to 42nd among men, posting the 33rd-fastest Half–25K split among men along the way. O'Malley was even more aggressive in the final stretch, jumping from 115th to 50th among men with the 29th-fastest 35K–finish split in the men's field. Both finished just outside the podium — 4th and 5th in M45-49 — but their back-half runs were among the most eye-catching in the entire age group.
