M30-34: Dan Barnes Dominates Virginia Beach in the Heat

Dan Barnes made the M30-34 race look straightforward on a day that was anything but. With temperatures at 71°F, 73% humidity, and a 17 mph wind battering Virginia Beach's coastal course, Barnes held 4th among men from the opening checkpoint all the way to the finish — never wavering, never fading. His 6:02/mi average across 26.2 miles was the clear benchmark of the age group, and his 9-minute-15-second winning margin over John Warnke reflects just how complete his performance was.

Warnke, meanwhile, ran one of the more satisfying progressions in the M30-34 field. Starting 12th among men, he steadily worked his way forward — 11th, 12th, 10th, 8th — landing 7th among men at the line in 2:47:35. Joel Deckard and William Throckmorton both made strong moves in the second half, with Deckard posting the 5th-fastest split in the field on the 30K–35K stretch on his way to 3rd in 2:53:30. Throckmorton had the 15th-fastest split in the field on the 25K–30K segment and briefly led Deckard in the standings, but couldn't hold the gap.

The battle for 5th through 7th was the tightest sequence of the day in M30-34. Matt Truninger ran a strong closing stretch — the 25th-fastest split in the field from 35K to the finish — to clock 2:59:34. Andrew Loiacono crossed one second later at 2:59:35, and Tyler Schmidt followed in 2:59:45. Eleven seconds covered three finishers, all of them earning the sub-3:00 mark they came to Virginia Beach for, in conditions that made every second of it count.
