M40-49 50K: Worcester dominates while Peterson and Hites wage a photo-finish battle for second

His 5:31:48 at 10:41/mi was simply in another gear — he moved as high as 2nd in the men's field at one point and never drifted below 3rd through the middle segments. On the Kick Ash→Snow Valley Peak stretch he posted the 2nd-fastest split in the men's field, which tells you where the race was won. For a 40-year-old from San Diego running high on the Sierra Nevada ridgeline, that kind of sustained output above 7,000 feet is a statement.

Behind him, the battle for second was decided by 13 seconds after more than six hours of racing. Kevin Peterson (Reno, 6:04:29) and Jared Hites (Akron, 6:04:42) were not running identical races to get there, though — Hites was as high as 3rd in the men's field early on before fading back through the middle, while Peterson steadily climbed from 10th to 6th. Peterson ran the Hobart→Waterfall segment with the 4th-fastest split in the men's field; Hites had posted the 4th-fastest split on Kick Ash→Snow Valley Peak earlier. Two different athletes surging at different moments — and the clock nearly couldn't separate them at the line. Erik Smart (Windsor, CA) rounded out the podium in 4th at 6:07:22, having run the 6th-fastest First Half split in the men's field on his way to a strong finish.

The day's most dramatic trajectory belonged to Gary Singh (Elk Grove, 7:04:00), who began the race buried in 71st place in the men's field and systematically picked off runner after runner, reaching 10th by the finish. His 4th-fastest Snow Valley Peak→Hobart split was the engine of that surge. It's the kind of race that looks like patience from the outside and feels like suffering from the inside — especially at this altitude.
