F15-19: Magdalena Marcelo Dominates the 10K in Fresno

Magdalena Marcelo, 19, from Porterville, made the F15-19 race her own from the front. Running at a 6:23-per-mile clip on a warm November morning in Fresno — 74°F and clear — she crossed in 39:37, a time that also placed her 7th among all women in the field. Her closing split from the 1-mile mark to the finish was the 5th-fastest among all women, and she used it to sweep from 7th to 1st in the women's standings. No one in her age group came within eleven minutes of her.

The real drama in the F15-19 group played out behind her. Daniela Aguilar (17, Fresno) and Ainsleykate Unruh (18, Clovis) ran virtually identical races, finishing in 51:03 and 51:05 respectively — a two-second gap after 6.2 miles. Both were climbing late: Aguilar moved from 38th to 12th among women on the closing segment, Unruh from 49th to 13th, with Unruh's closing split actually ranking 15th among women to Aguilar's 16th. The places held, but only barely.

Annie Neufeld (16, Exeter) finished a solid 4th in 52:02, moving from 34th to 18th among women in the closing stretch. Nseya Mutombo (15, Fresno) — the youngest in the top five — took 5th in 53:58, showing that the age group's depth extended all the way down to the youngest eligible runners. With 27 finishers in the F15-19 group across a warm Central Valley morning, it was a strong showing for the age group from start to finish.
