F50-54 at UTMB Ultra Trail: Austrui Leads from Front to Finish

Seven women lined up in F50-54 for UTMB's most technical race — 145 km from Courmayeur to Chamonix, with 9,500 meters of climbing through the Beaufortain region and a night start at 23:50. Anne-Sophie Austrui, 52, ran the race on her own terms from the outset. Her gender place barely wavered through the middle checkpoints — sitting 42nd among women at the first two marks — and she ultimately crossed in 35:59:36, posting the 33rd-fastest women's split on the Beaufort sortie→Hauteluce segment. No one in F50-54 came close to her pace of 23:58/mi across those brutal mountain miles.

The real drama unfolded behind her. Emily Edwards, 53, was a steady climber through the women's field — moving from 90th at the first checkpoint to 45th by the finish — and she nearly held off Ayaka Mori, 50, who was arguably the most dynamic racer in the group. Mori started 126th among women and surged relentlessly, logging the 21st-fastest women's split on the Les Contamines Montjoie→Col de Tricot stretch. That pace brought her all the way to 47th among women — but it wasn't quite enough. Edwards held 2nd by 1 minute and 33 seconds after a day and a half of racing. Close doesn't begin to cover it.

Caroline Jezequel, 50, finished 4th in 39:19:25, maintaining a steady position in the women's field throughout and posting the 38th-fastest women's split on La Gittaz→Entre deux Nants. Then came the back-of-field battle: Gruffaz crossed 5th in 42:08:04 and Machado 6th in 42:12:45 — less than five minutes apart after 42-plus hours on course. Anne Farley, 50, rounded out the seven finishers in 43:28:08. In a race this long and this unforgiving, every one of them earned the finish line.
