M30-34: Brian Powers Owns the Napa 5K

• Brian Powers, 34, wins in 20:31 (6:36/mi) — 50 seconds clear of runner-up Jake Shillue's 21:21.
• Shillue and Young separated by 2:26 — the gap from 2nd to 3rd was far wider than the gap from 1st to 2nd.
• Javier Meza (30:54), Ryan Mcguire (30:55) — 12th and 13th finish just one second apart in a field of 32.
• Nicholas Garcia (25:55) and Willis Bailey (26:40) round out the top six, with 4th through 6th covered by under a minute and a half.

Under cool, humid Napa skies, Brian Powers of Sausalito ran the M30-34 field off its feet from the jump. His 20:31 finish — a 6:36/mi clip on the Kiwanis Club's out-and-back course — put 50 seconds of clear air between him and everyone else. That margin to second place was decisive and never in doubt.

Jake Shillue made the trip from Newmarket, New Hampshire worthwhile, crossing in 21:21 (6:52/mi) to lock up second. But the real gulf in this race opened between Shillue and the rest: Nate Young of Lincroft, NJ came home third in 23:47 at 7:39/mi, more than two and a half minutes behind Shillue and a full 3:16 off Powers. The podium was sorted early and sorted convincingly.

Behind the top three, the race got genuinely interesting. Javier Solis (25:31) and Nicholas Garcia (25:55) ran 4th and 5th within 24 seconds of each other, with Willis Bailey (26:40) not far behind in 6th. Then came a mid-pack cluster where every second counted: Javier Meza and Ryan Mcguire finished 12th and 13th in 30:54 and 30:55 respectively — one tick of the clock separating them after more than three miles of racing.

All told, 32 men finished the M30-34 race, with another 12 beyond the listed top 20 adding to a solid field on a damp Napa morning. Powers's win, though, was the story — calm, controlled, and never seriously threatened.
