M50-54: Ruiz runs away with it in Napa

On a cool, humid morning in Napa, with broken clouds and an 8 mph wind, Ruiz ran with a composure that the numbers make impossible to ignore.

The real drama played out in the battle for 2nd. Denver's Rabi Jha, 50, crossed in 32:51 to claim the runner-up spot, but local Napa runner Thai Pham, 52, made him earn it — finishing just four seconds back in 32:55 at 10:36/mi. Jha's 10:34/mi pace held just enough to keep Pham at bay, but it was close enough that a slightly stronger closing stretch from Pham would have flipped the result.

Aaron Lawman of Vallejo crossed 4th in 38:58, well clear of the next group. That next group — Jim Walters and Ricardo Rafael — ran a tight race of their own, finishing 5th and 6th in 45:44 and 46:07 respectively, only 23 seconds apart after more than three miles of racing. Bringing it home for the eight-man field were Neil Merino (58:21) and Jose Ona (58:36), finishing 7th and 8th, 15 seconds apart — a fitting bookend to a race full of close finishes beyond the leader.
