M35-39 Half Marathon: Schweitzer Holds Off Kislyuk by One Second

• One second. Andy Schweitzer (1:10:12) edged Dmitry Kislyuk (1:10:13) at the line — both averaging 5:21/mi — the narrowest margin in the M35-39 field of 171.
• Kislyuk's closing surge: Kislyuk posted the 5th-fastest men's split on the 6.9M→Finish segment, moving from 9th to 6th among men; Schweitzer's 6th-fastest men's split on the same stretch wasn't quite enough to shake him — but it was enough to hold the win.
• Levi Miller's mid-race charge: Miller (3rd, 1:11:13) ran the 8th-fastest men's split from 3.1M to 6.9M, and Colin McGrath (4th, 1:11:45) posted the 6th-fastest men's split on that same segment — two athletes pushing hard through the heart of the course.
• Jeff Aspinall rounded out the top five in 1:16:03 (5:48/mi), more than four and a half minutes back of Schweitzer but well clear of 6th-place Steven He (1:19:32, 6:04/mi).

Cool, humid Napa morning conditions — 55°F and 93% humidity — set the table for fast racing at the front of M35-39, and the top two delivered something special: a one-second verdict over 13.1 miles. Schweitzer, 38, from West Haven, UT, crossed in 1:10:12 to claim the win, but Kislyuk, 35, from San Francisco, made him earn every step of it. Kislyuk actually moved more aggressively through the men's field in the final stretch — climbing from 9th to 6th among men — while Schweitzer slipped slightly from 4th to 5th among men. The faster closing split belonged to Kislyuk; the win belonged to Schweitzer, by a sliver.

Behind the top two, the story was the mid-race battle for the final podium spots. Miller (1:11:13, 5:26/mi) and McGrath (1:11:45, 5:28/mi) both turned in strong 3.1M-to-6.9M splits — 8th- and 6th-fastest among men on that segment, respectively — but McGrath's edge in the middle didn't translate to a pass at the finish. Miller held third by 32 seconds, and the two Napa Wine Country contenders were separated from the rest of the top five by a significant gap: Aspinall's 1:16:03 sits nearly five minutes off the winning time.

The field of 171 spread out considerably from there, with He (6th, 1:19:32), David Urista (7th, 1:21:35), and Daniel Raynard (8th, 1:22:12) forming a compact cluster before the pack settled into the 1:23–1:30 range through the top 20. Three of the top eleven — Stephen Kallir (10th, 1:23:25), James Jewer (11th, 1:23:44), and Owen Robinson (12th, 1:27:15) — made the trip from Alberta, Canada, adding a little international flavor to a Northern California race.
