The contrast with Pearson is worth noting: while Pearson was climbing through the men's field from start to finish, Zhang's gender-place trajectory drifted slightly backward (81st to 84th to 88th), meaning he was running well but others were catching up around him. He held on for 2nd regardless, finishing a comfortable 9:14 ahead of 3rd.

Alan Lu (55, Santa Clara) and Michael Ranieri (57, Eagle, ID) waged a quieter but real battle for the final podium spot. Lu came through in 1:38:57 to claim 3rd; Ranieri posted 1:39:46 for 4th — 49 seconds the difference, with Ranieri's gender place sliding from 171st to 184th across the race while Lu held steadier. Both ran comfortably clear of 5th place.

The battle for 5th was the closest finish in M55-59: Todd Oliver of Carmel, IN crossed in 1:49:55 and Charles Huang of Los Altos Hills in 1:49:58 — three seconds apart after 13.1 miles, with Oliver having faded through the field (261st to 319th among men) while Huang arrived just behind. Paul Anderson (7th, 1:50:22), Greg Scattini (8th, 1:52:05), and a deep field of 65 finishers rounded out a competitive morning in the Napa Valley.
