Rocket City 10K: Denise Murphy edges out a thriller in F55-59

• Denise Murphy wins the F55-59 group in 57:55 (9:19/mi) — the only finisher to break 58 minutes.
• 12 seconds separated first from second: Murphy over Penny Taylor (58:07), the closest battle of the day.
• Third through fourth was nearly as tight: Julie Nidiffer (1:00:18) and Diane Palkert (1:00:22) were just four seconds apart.
• 18 women finished F55-59 across a spread of nearly 57 minutes, from Murphy's 57:55 to Debby Reed's 1:54:44.

Denise Murphy of Madison, AL made it look controlled but the clock tells a different story — Penny Taylor of Hartselle was right on her heels the entire way. Murphy's 9:19/mi pace held just enough to keep Taylor's 9:21/mi at bay, a margin of 12 seconds over 6.2 miles in warm, breezy conditions (70°F, 17 mph winds, and 76% humidity that made every mile feel longer than it was). It was a genuine duel, and Murphy didn't have much room for error.

Just behind that lead pair, Nashville's Julie Nidiffer and Aitkin, Minnesota's Diane Palkert staged their own mini-race for the third step of the podium. Nidiffer crossed in 1:00:18 to Palkert's 1:00:22 — four seconds after more than an hour of running. Debra Shone of Glasgow, KY rounded out the top five in 1:01:56, running a solid 9:58/mi to finish clear of the field behind her.

The middle of the F55-59 group saw a noticeable gap open after Shone, with April Hartsook (1:04:31) and Terri Engle (1:07:12) leading a cluster of runners in the 1:04–1:08 range. Stacy Brown of Gurley, AL was just 20 seconds behind Engle at 1:07:32. From there the field spread out considerably, with Debby Reed completing the 18-woman group in 1:54:44 — a reminder that on a humid December morning in Huntsville, simply finishing is its own achievement.
