David Bains, racing in his home city, put together a commanding performance in the M40-44 group. His 39:51 at 6:25 per mile was the kind of run that leaves little room for debate — nearly half a minute faster than the next man and more than six and a half minutes clear of third place. On a day that offered no favors — 70°F, 17 mph winds, and thick humidity for December — that margin means something.

Oscar Martinez made the trip from Knoxville and gave Bains the only real company at the front. His 40:18 (6:29/mi) was a strong run in its own right, but Bains had already done the damage. Behind them, the race for the podium was genuinely compelling: Christopher Braun, Scott Sandlin, and Hiroshi Noda crossed within 34 seconds of one another, with Sandlin and Noda separated by just four seconds for 4th and 5th.

The middle of the field — Josh Cauthon (49:23) through Markneil Arias (53:00) — ran a steady cluster around the 8-minute-mile range, while the back half of the group stretched out considerably.
