• Vickie Varnes won the F60-64 group in 26:00 (8:22/mi) — more than 10 minutes and 40 seconds clear of 2nd place.

Vickie Varnes, 61, from Pell City, made this one a solo performance from start to finish. Her 8:22/mi average put her in a different race entirely — no one else in the F60-64 group came within 10 minutes of her. On a mild December morning in Huntsville, 59°F with a light breeze, conditions were as cooperative as they get, and Varnes took full advantage.

The fight for 2nd was decided by a sliver. Angela McKenzie of Athens and Jeannie Lillystone of Royal Oak, Michigan both stopped the clock at 36:43 — but McKenzie crossed the line just ahead to claim 2nd, with Lillystone taking 3rd. Julie Bonner of Decatur, Georgia came in 4th at 40:57, more than four minutes back from the pair ahead of her.

The real drama of the race unfolded further down the field. Nancy Downard, Shari Shrum, Kedra Burris, Lisa Fragakis, and Brenda Marshall all finished between 53:22 and 55:10 — five runners separated by less than two minutes across places 7 through 11. Shrum, the local Huntsville runner, held off Burris by 25 seconds for 8th, while Marshall narrowly beat out Fragakis by just three seconds for 11th. Jackie Greer of Olive Branch, Mississippi closed out the group in 57:45.
