Under mild December skies in Huntsville — 59°F with a light breeze — four men in the M70-74 group toed the line for the Rocket City 5K. Victor Taylor, 72, from Woodville, AL, made it look straightforward: his 10:58/mi pace was the class of the group from the start, and his 34:05 finish was never seriously threatened.

Behind him, fellow 72-year-old Allan Elliott of Madison, AL crossed in 42:22 — a solid 13:38/mi — to take 2nd. Randall Phillips, 70, making the trip from Murphy, NC, came in 3rd at 47:32, running 15:18/mi. The gap between Elliott and Phillips was a little over five minutes, which in a four-man group at this distance represents a meaningful difference in pace rather than a close contest.

John Carter, 71, of Ashland, OH, completed the group in 57:37 at 18:33/mi.
