M20-24 5K: Shah runs away from the field in Huntsville

Alex Shah made the M20-24 race his own from the gun. Running at 5:31 per mile, the 23-year-old from Raleigh crossed in 17:07 — a time that would be remarkable in any age group, let alone a 5K on a Saturday morning. The gap back to Joshua Klanderud in 2nd was a staggering 11 minutes and one second, which means Shah was essentially finishing as Klanderud was still well into his second mile.

Behind Shah, the real competition played out between Klanderud (28:08, 9:03/mi) and Colby Deason (30:17, 9:45/mi). Klanderud, making the trip from Broomfield, Colorado, held off the Madison, Alabama local by just over two minutes to claim the runner-up spot. Deason in turn kept 4th-place Simon Rentfrow (30:58) at arm's length — a margin of 41 seconds — while Rentfrow and fellow 21-year-old Nicolas Breuil (33:37) ran a similar gap apart in 4th and 5th.

Calvin White III (37:04) and Jakub Slowik (39:17) rounded out the middle of the pack, separated by a little over two minutes. Henry Carpenter (50:31) was 9th, while Xavier Sanders' recorded time of 9:49:39 stands out as a data anomaly rather than a race result. The story of the day, though, belonged entirely to Shah — whose 17:07 was in a different universe from the rest of the M20-24 field.
