Rocket City 5K: Cosgrove Dominates the M0-14 Field

• Michael Cosgrove, age 13, won the M0-14 group in 22:01 — a 7:05/mi pace that put 1:23 of clear air between him and 2nd-place Bryant Bowen.
• The top three finished within 2:38 of each other, with Sam Barton (14, Lexington, KY) rounding out the podium in 24:39.
• The youngest finisher was Jai Narahari, age 6, who crossed in 36:57 — completing a 5K before most kids his age have learned to tie their shoes.
• Miron Shaiakhov, age 8, finished 9th in 34:00 — ahead of two 14-year-olds (Josh Gongon and David Webb) who followed within 21 seconds of each other.

Michael Cosgrove set the tone early and never let up. His 7:05/mi average was the sharpest pace in a 16-runner M0-14 field, and his 22:01 finish was a full 1:23 ahead of Bryant Bowen's 23:24. Bowen, just 12 years old out of Birmingham, ran a composed 7:32/mi to hold off 14-year-old Sam Barton, who came in at 24:39 — meaning the podium was decided by the time the clock hit 25 minutes.

Behind the top three, the race opened up considerably. Arnav Singh, just 10 years old from Madison, ran 27:39 to claim 4th — a strong result that left him more than a minute clear of the 5th- and 6th-place finishers, Brett Perry and Noah Harbin, who came in at 28:42 and 28:52 respectively. Those two were separated by only 10 seconds over 3.1 miles.

One of the quiet stories of the day was 8-year-old Miron Shaiakhov from Matthews, NC, who crossed in 34:00 and finished ahead of a pair of 14-year-olds — Gongon (34:15) and Webb (34:21) — who were themselves separated by just six seconds. Age and finishing order don't always line up neatly.

At the back, all 16 runners finished, from Cosgrove's brisk 7:05/mi down to Hayden Broussard's 16:03/mi. Six-year-old Jai Narahari's 36:57 was a finish worth noting on its own terms — completing a 5K at any pace is an achievement, and he did it ahead of two older competitors.
