Rocket City Front Half: Cardwell dominates M45-49 with a sub-92-minute run

• Jody Cardwell (48, Knoxville) won M45-49 in 1:31:27 at a 6:59/mi pace — nearly 17 minutes clear of 2nd place.
• Matt Casiano took 2nd in 1:48:26, with the 2nd-fastest closing split (10K→Finish) in the group.
• Samuel Lasseter and Corey Glover were separated by just 2:43 for 4th and 5th, both picking up places in the back half of the race.
• Brady Wentlandt and Jimmy Gabany finished 9th and 8th respectively, separated by a single second — 2:42:17 to 2:42:18.

Jody Cardwell made this one look straightforward. Running 6:59 per mile across 13.1 miles in 70°F heat and a 17 mph wind, the 48-year-old from Knoxville crossed in 1:31:27 — a margin so large over the rest of the M45-49 field that the race for 1st was effectively over early. His closing leg was equally sharp: the 6th-fastest 10K-to-finish split among all men in the race, a sign he wasn't just surviving the conditions but racing through them.

Matt Casiano, running at home in Huntsville, was a clear 2nd in 1:48:26. His 8:16/mi average held up well through the back half — he posted the 24th-fastest men's closing split in the field, gaining three places among men on that final stretch to finish comfortably ahead of Amado Mena (2:00:40), who rounded out the podium after a steady 9:12/mi effort.

The battle for 4th through 6th had some real movement. Samuel Lasseter and Corey Glover both climbed the men's standings in the closing leg — Lasseter moving from 72nd to 62nd among men, Glover from 84th to 75th — before finishing 2:43 apart at 2:07:10 and 2:09:53. Jason Elmer (49, Bowling Green) came home 6th in 2:14:01, holding a comfortable gap over the back of the field.

At the very back, the race ended with one of the tightest finishes of the day: Jimmy Gabany and Brady Wentlandt both clocked 12:23/mi and crossed within one second of each other — 2:42:17 to 2:42:18 — with Gabany taking 8th by the slimmest of margins.
