Rocket City Front Half: Patterson dominates M55-59 in the Alabama heat

Seventy degrees, 17 mph winds, and 76% humidity made Huntsville's December morning feel anything but winter — and Timothy Patterson of Chattanooga didn't seem to care. The 59-year-old ran 7:48/mi from gun to tape, winning M55-59 by 7 minutes and 50 seconds. That's not a race — that's a statement. Patterson also picked up the 20th-fastest 10K-to-finish split among the men, a sign he was still pressing in the back half while others were managing the conditions.

Gregory Brink (Chicago, 57) held second place comfortably at 1:50:01, and Gene Holder (Pelham, AL, 55) was a solid third at 1:55:17. Mark Schafer (Baton Rouge, 57) slotted into fourth at 1:57:03, keeping the top four within a 15-minute band. The most interesting mover in the top five was Panama's Pedro Moreno, who ran himself from 69th to 55th in the men's field over the final 10K segment — the 43rd-fastest closing split among the men — to lock up fifth in M55-59 at 2:01:21.

Behind the top five, Chuck May and Jeff Matlock ran nearly identical races — 2:07:12 and 2:07:50 respectively — separated by just 38 seconds after 13.1 miles of work in the humidity. The middle of the field compressed between 2:14 and 2:17, with five runners — Tompkins, Murgas, Norris, Jackson, and Niuh — finishing within a three-minute window from 8th through 12th. At the back, Bill Thorner of Cincinnati closed it out in 3:04:02, completing a field that ranged from sharp-edged to hard-earned across all 19 finishers.
