Kyla Maher of San Anselmo owned the closing miles. She was already 10th among women at the halfway mark, but her 4th-fastest women's split on the 2.5K-to-finish leg lifted her to 8th in the women's field and locked up the F40-44 title in 21:18. That 6:51/mi average tells the story: she ran with genuine urgency from start to finish.

Beth Eastman made the race a contest. The Hobart, WI runner held 9th among women at the halfway point and held that exact spot at the line — a model of even-paced execution. Her 6th-fastest women's closing split was strong in its own right, but Maher's closing gear was simply a touch sharper. Seven seconds is the margin between them, and it's a real one.

Stephanie Ellis, racing on home turf in San Francisco, rounded out the podium in 22:39 (7:17/mi), posting the 12th-fastest women's closing split and moving from 14th to 13th among women over the back half. Behind her, the 4th-place battle was a genuine scramble: Ursula Hill stormed from 25th to 18th among women on the closing leg to claim 4th in 23:39, while Michelle Duncan faded from 18th to 19th to finish 5th in the same clock time. Alba Elena Silva Gutierrez (6th, 23:41) was just two seconds further back — three athletes within two seconds of each other made for a lively race to the finish line on the Embarcadero.
