Eugene McGuire made a statement from the gun. The 61-year-old San Francisco local crossed in 22:14 at a 7:09/mi clip — a gap of 2:04 over Ian Bishop's 24:18 in 2nd. In a 5K, two minutes is a chasm, and McGuire's margin left no doubt. Bishop, also 61 and also from San Francisco, ran a composed 7:49/mi to hold off the rest of the field comfortably.

Behind Bishop, the real drama played out between Sridhar Narayanan and Gilles Defours. The 60-year-old from Cupertino and the 60-year-old from Tence, France, were separated by just 14 seconds at the finish — 25:17 to 25:31 — but it was Narayanan who ran the stronger second half. He gained 19 places among the broader women's field on the 2.5K-to-finish segment, while Defours gained 15. Narayanan was reeling people in; Defours held his own but couldn't quite match that closing pace, and 3rd was the reward.

Bill Malachowski (Collegeville, PA) rounded out the top five in 26:36, also a strong closer — gaining 17 places in the back half. From there, Reginald Daniels (27:20, 6th) through Robert Weltman (38:45, 20th) spread across a wide range of paces, with 17 mph winds off the bay making every minute earned on these San Francisco streets a genuine effort.
