M70-74: Rosales Owns the Streets of San Francisco

Leopoldo Rosales of So San Francisco made this one look like a home-course advantage. The 72-year-old crossed in 29:33 at a 9:31/mi clip, putting 1:11 between himself and the rest of the M70-74 field — a gap that left no doubt about who owned this race from the start. Running in 60°F with a stiff 17 mph wind off the Bay, Rosales turned in the kind of performance that doesn't need a close finish to be compelling.

Behind him, Reagan Rice of Gainesville made a move in the back half of the race that's worth noting. Rice, 73, finished 2nd in 30:44, and his 379th-fastest women's split on the 2.5K-to-finish segment helped him climb from 390th to 373rd in the overall men's standings — a sign he was building momentum late. Ricciardelli, 70, out of Medfield, MA, did even better in that closing stretch, posting the 398th-fastest women's split on the same segment and surging from 468th to 409th overall among men, though he couldn't quite close the 1:12 gap to Rice, finishing 3rd in 31:56.

Spencer Fleischer (4th, 33:48) and Tom Gorka (5th, 34:30) both ran solid races, with Fleischer holding a comfortable 42-second cushion. But just behind Gorka came Arturo Órdenez Sánchez of Manteca, CA — only eight seconds back at 34:38 — making that 5th-6th battle the tightest of the day. Gerald Wong rounded out the top seven in 39:16, before a significant gap opened to the back of the field, where William Butler of Hopewell, VA, closed out the 12-man group in 1:07:14.
