M75-79: Arnold Runs Away from the Field in San Francisco

Eight men aged 75 to 77 toed the line in San Francisco on a brisk, breezy morning — 60°F with a 17 mph wind off the bay — and Laurence Arnold of Hacienda Heights made his intentions clear from the start. The 76-year-old built a lead that only grew, crossing in 33:25 at a 10:45/mi clip to claim the M75-79 title by a comfortable 1:30 margin.

Robert Parks, 75, of Vallejo gave chase and held his own through the first half, but the gap was already set. Parks finished in 34:55 (11:14/mi) for a solid second-place result — the two of them well clear of the rest of the field. Between Arnold and Parks and the next finisher stretched a full 13 minutes of open road.

That next wave arrived in a tight cluster. Gi Chul Kim, 77, of Bellevue edged in at 48:10 for 3rd, with Joe Perea (77, Cheyenne) just 18 seconds behind in 48:28 and Michael C Roston (76, Carlsbad) another 29 seconds back in 48:57. Perea actually gained a few spots in the broader men's field on the back half — his 812th-fastest men's split on the 2.5K-to-finish segment edged out Roston's 818th — making 4th the hardest-fought position of the day.

Richard Raffalow (77, Van Nuys) came home 6th in 53:06, while Abhay Deshpande (77, San Francisco — racing in his own backyard) and Richard Schlueter II, registering from APO, AE, closed out the field at 59:42 and 59:59 respectively. All eight men finished. In a 5K with a 17 mph headwind to contend with, that's no small thing.
