San Francisco Marathon 10K — F40-44: Nevarez dominates in the city fog

Under a cool, overcast San Francisco sky — 57°F and barely a breath of wind — Diane Nevarez of Turlock put on the most commanding performance in the F40-44 field. Her 45:10 finish at a 7:16/mi clip placed her 21st among all women, and she held that position rock-steady from the midpoint to the line, never wavering. The 2:16 gap she opened over second place was decisive; this was a wire-to-wire statement.

Maki Deguchi of Los Angeles took second in 47:26 (7:38/mi), running a solid but clearly different gear than Nevarez — a 22-second-per-mile difference that tells the real story of the gap between them. Deguchi slipped two spots among women on the closing stretch, finishing 39th in the women's field, but held her F40-44 podium position comfortably. Atetegeb Habtemariam of Brentwood rounded out the podium in 50:45 (8:10/mi), actually gaining three spots among women over the final segment to finish 3rd in F40-44.

The race for 4th and 5th was where the action was. Kim Wong (Alameda) ran the stronger back half, climbing from 98th to 87th among women with the 89th-fastest closing split in the women's field, finishing in 51:34. Right behind her, Angelina Lopez (Stockton, 52:07) and Annika Malik (San Rafael, 52:09) were separated by just two seconds — but Lopez faded on the closing stretch, dropping from 95th to 102nd among women, while Malik held steady to claim 6th in 53:34. In a 159-finisher F40-44 field spread across the hills of San Francisco, every second in that middle pack was hard-earned.
