Aleksandr Fetisov of San Francisco ran away with the M40-44 title on a cool, overcast morning along the bay. His 6:11/mi average was a cut above the rest of the 148-finisher field, and he was never seriously threatened. By the final stretch from 4.62 miles to the finish, Fetisov was posting the 17th-fastest split among the men — a strong close that cemented his lead and his win.

The real drama unfolded behind him. Robby Haegdorens (Nacka) and Arturo Nevarez (Turlock, CA) ran shoulder-to-shoulder through much of the race, both averaging 6:17/mi. On the closing segment, Haegdorens posted the 20th-fastest men's split to Nevarez's 23rd-fastest — Haegdorens was the one making the move, and he held 2nd by four seconds. John Dinan (Los Angeles, CA) rounded out the top four in 39:38 at 6:23/mi, running a composed and measured race but unable to bridge the gap to the leading trio.

Douglas Johnston (San Luis Obispo, CA) took 5th in 43:27, more than four minutes back of Dinan, effectively defining a second tier in the M40-44 race. From there, Hugo Barros (46:35), Servando Hernandez Castro (47:33), and a cluster of runners through the mid-pack filled out the field at a 7:30–8:07/mi range. Gassan and Han's near-identical finishes of 48:52 and 48:54 made for one of the tighter battles of the day, with Gassan holding 11th by just two ticks of the clock.
