San Francisco 10K: Taitague dominates the F70-74 field

Marie Taitague of Laurel, MD made this one look decisive from the start. Her 1:07:59 finish at 10:56/mi was a commanding performance, and the 8-minute-plus gap she built over Gini Cunningham left no doubt about who owned this race. At 70, Taitague was the youngest in the field — and the fastest by a margin that told the whole story.

Cunningham, representing Winnemucca, NV, ran a solid 1:16:12 to lock up second, though she lost a few spots among the broader women's field over the final stretch from 4.62 miles to the finish. Janette Mayes of Seattle — the oldest finisher in the group at 74 — crossed third in 1:24:02, also ceding a handful of places among the women late. The gap between second and third was nearly eight minutes, making this a race of clear separations rather than tight battles at the front.

The back half of the field told its own story. Christine Minhondo of Novato, CA was the one runner who actually picked off competitors in the final segment, climbing a few spots among the women on her way to a fourth-place finish in 1:35:17 at 15:20/mi. Kathleen Holmes of La Cañada, CA rounded out the five-woman field in 1:57:08 — a 18:51/mi effort that brought her home just one spot deeper in the women's standings than where she entered that final stretch.
