F55-59: Leahey Runs Away from the Field in San Francisco

Kira Leahey, 55, of Danville, ran the F55-59 race wire-to-wire in command. Her 7:51/mi pace held up through the fog and humidity of a 57°F San Francisco morning, and she closed with the 45th-fastest women's split on the 4.62M-to-finish segment — still pushing hard when it mattered. She crossed in 48:48, a full 1:42 ahead of runner-up Helen Molloy.

Molloy, also 55 and racing on home turf in San Francisco, held steady throughout, finishing in 50:30 at 8:08/mi. Her gender place barely budged — 77th among women at both checkpoints — a sign of a controlled, consistent effort. Lucy Cheng of Reno closed the gap to 3rd, finishing in 51:52 and picking up six spots among women in the final leg, making her the most active mover at the front of the F55-59 field.

The battle from 4th through 8th was its own race within the race. Raina Macaire (55:14) and Mirella Rodriguez (56:39) separated themselves from Karen Bowman (58:02), Anne-Marie Collins (58:38), and Kim Mroczkowski (59:26) — all five finishing within a four-and-a-half-minute window. Rodriguez's closing surge, gaining 23 spots among women in the final segment, was the most dramatic move in the group.
