SF Marathon 10K: Guerrini dominates the F55-59 field in dominant fashion

Liz Guerrini of San Francisco owned this race from start to finish. Running at a 7:22/mi clip — nearly 50 seconds per mile faster than the runner-up — the 56-year-old moved from 18th among all women at the 4.62-mile checkpoint up to 15th by the finish, posting the 12th-fastest women's closing split in the entire field. In cool, overcast conditions along the San Francisco waterfront, her 45:44 was a performance that stood apart.

Behind her, the battle for the podium was tight. Lisa Thompson of Houston and Carolyn Hamlin of Rancho Cordova ran nearly in lockstep over the final stretch, both moving up through the women's field — Thompson from 67th to 55th, Hamlin from 63rd to 57th. Thompson's slightly faster closing split (43rd among women vs. Hamlin's 53rd) was just enough to hold the gap: 50:55 to 51:09, a 14-second margin for silver.

Fourth-place Iris Wu (52:20, 8:25/mi) rounded out a competitive top four, finishing just over a minute behind Hamlin. Fifth-place Jennifer Chu (54:23) was the one notable fade in the top five — after holding 98th among women through 4.62 miles, she drifted back to 113th by the tape, suggesting the closing miles cost her. Abby Oehler (56:24) and Teresa Nurse (57:18) completed a Bay Area-heavy top seven, with Nurse traveling the farthest — all the way from Curragh — to claim 7th in 9:13/mi.
