M40-44 10K: Allbritton Dominates the San Francisco Streets

Aaron Allbritton made the M40-44 race look almost unfair. The San Leandro 40-year-old crossed in 35:16 at a 5:41/mi clip — posting the 5th-fastest closing split among all men on the 4.62M-to-Finish segment and leaving the rest of his cohort well behind. His nearest challenger, Pontus Hellaker of Alingsås, finished in 36:57, meaning Allbritton had built a 1:41 cushion by the tape. In a 156-finisher field on a cool, overcast San Francisco morning, that kind of margin is a statement.

Behind Allbritton, the real contest was between Hellaker and San Francisco's Alan Thong. Hellaker held 13th among men through the early going and closed with the 10th-fastest final-segment split in the men's field. Thong, meanwhile, ran the 16th-fastest closing split — quicker in absolute terms than many in the field, but not quite enough to reel in Hellaker. The 17-second gap between 2nd and 3rd at the line tells the story: Thong was gaining, but Hellaker had just enough cushion to hold on.

John Evans (San Mateo) rounded out the top four in 39:01 at 6:17/mi, while Lawrence Chiu of San Rafael claimed 5th in 42:23 — a result made more impressive by the fact that he'd already raced the Saturday 5K, where he placed 10th among men.
