M20-29: Florian Bochert Runs San Francisco Into the Ground

Florian Bochert, 24, from Bielefeld, didn't just win the M20-29 field of 191 — he ran a time that would have taken down last year's overall men's champion. His 32:47 at 5:17/mi through San Francisco's foggy, humid streets on Sunday morning was a statement performance, and he backed it up with the 2nd-fastest final-segment split (4.62M to finish) among all men in the race. His nearest competitor, fellow Bielefeld runner Michael Srinivasan, crossed in 36:28 — a full 3:41 back. That gap tells the whole story of the front of this race: Bochert was simply in a different contest.

Behind Srinivasan, Berkeley's Warren Xiong took 3rd in 37:28 (6:02/mi), and Mauritz Brand — another Bielefeld representative — rounded out the podium in 4th at 38:04. Two runners from the same German city taking 1st and 4th in a San Francisco race is a subplot worth noting. Leeam Ng Tang Fui completed the top five in 39:57, the only finisher in the top five to crack the 40-minute barrier from the wrong side.

The race's most entertaining subplot played out just outside the top five. Nahom Zerai (21, Houston) and Ino Puente (20, Millbrae) ran the entire 10K and emerged from it separated by just two seconds — 41:03 to 41:05 — for 6th and 7th respectively. Luca Barbacioru followed in 8th at 41:49, keeping the 6th-through-8th spread inside 46 seconds. Further back, Chuma Anigbogu (11th, 42:39) and Maxime Briones (12th, 42:43) staged their own close finish, four seconds apart at 6:52/mi apiece — a tight duel that played out over more than six miles of San Francisco pavement.
