B.A.A. 10K F55-59: Whitworth Runs Away with It in the Boston Heat

Maria Whitworth came to Boston and made it look straightforward. The 57-year-old from Houston ran a 6:57/mi average to finish in 43:14 — a margin so commanding that the rest of the age group was still racing hard for second while she was already cooling down. She was steadily climbing through the women's field all race long, moving from 79th among women at the first checkpoint to 71st by the finish, and her 5K-to-8K split ranked 62nd fastest among all women — a strong mid-race push that underscored just how controlled and consistent her effort was.

Behind her, the real drama played out in a tight cluster fighting for the podium. Carmela Taveras of Tewksbury crossed in 48:44 to claim second, with Evelyne Schenk of Natick just two seconds behind in 48:46 — a gap that held despite Schenk having entered the second half in a stronger position among the women's field. Taveras had been the bigger mover, surging from 206th among women near the start all the way to 167th by the finish, and her second-half split ranked 147th among all women to seal the runner-up spot. Deveril Wint of Brooklyn, NC was right there too, finishing 4th in 48:56 — just 12 seconds off second place — after a powerful middle segment that ranked 139th among women on the 5K-to-8K stretch.

Jane Polley rounded out the top five in 50:25, with Cynthia Weber 6th in 50:57 and Shengfang Jin 7th in 52:26. The depth of the age group was real: 158 finishers braved the heat and humidity to complete the 10K, with the top 20 all coming in under 57:11.
