He was moving through the field all race long, improving his position from 190th to 172nd among all women in the race by the finish, and he posted the 167th-fastest split in the field on the 5K-to-8K stretch. For a 13-year-old on a warm June morning in Boston, that's a commanding performance.

Behind him, Bradon Spiess (13, West Roxbury) and Sean Finnegan (14, Hopkinton) ran a tight secondary battle. Spiess crossed in 47:04 at a 7:34/mi pace, with Finnegan not far behind at 48:59 and 7:53/mi — a gap of under two minutes that held relatively steady through the second half of the race.

Further back, the race had its own subplot. Nathan Wasielewski (12, Natick) held fourth at 55:36, but William Frazier (12, Hingham) was gaining ground over the final stretch — Frazier's 8K-to-finish split was actually the stronger of the two, though Wasielewski's earlier cushion proved decisive.
