F15-19 at the B.A.A. 10K: Wudu Surges Late to Claim the Age Group

• Melknat Wudu, 19, wins F15-19 in 31:15 (5:02/mi), posting the fastest women's closing split from 8K to the finish to overturn the lead in the final stretch.
• Two seconds separated first and second: Senayet Getachew, 18, crossed in 31:17 with the second-fastest women's split on that same closing segment — she was right there, but Wudu's late surge made the difference.
• Kenzie Bailey, 19, of Georgetown, TX ran 40:32 for 3rd in F15-19, finishing more than nine minutes behind the top two — a separate race entirely at the front of the rest of the field.
• Mallory Howe, 15, was the youngest finisher in the top ten, placing 6th in 45:11 — the only 15-year-old in that group.

The story of the F15-19 race at the top was a tale of two runners pulling away from the entire women's field in brutal conditions — 87°F, 66% humidity, and an 18 mph wind in Boston. Wudu and Getachew were running at 5:02/mi, trading places with the lead pack through the early miles. At the 5K checkpoint, Wudu sat 2nd among women and Getachew 4th; by 8K, Wudu had slipped to 4th among women and Getachew to 5th, suggesting the heat was compressing the lead group. Then came the closing 2K.

Wudu turned in the fastest women's closing split in the entire race, moving from 4th among women at 8K all the way to 1st at the finish line. Getachew matched nearly that exact gear shift — her closing split was the second-fastest among all women — but she couldn't quite close the gap that Wudu had opened. Two seconds across 10K in those conditions is a razor-thin margin, and the places tell you Wudu earned every sliver of it.

Behind them, Bailey and Natalie Martin (4th, 41:34) ran solid, measured races, both holding or improving their positions through the back half. The remaining 72 finishers in F15-19 filled out a deep age group, with Howe's 45:11 at age 15 standing out as a quietly impressive performance near the top of that pack.
