F40-44 at the B.A.A. 10K: Marchant Dominates in the Heat

• Lanni Marchant won the F40-44 group in 34:11 (5:30/mi), more than a minute clear of the field on a sweltering 87°F morning.
• Caroline Rotich took 2nd in 35:21, closing with the 24th-fastest women's split from 8K to the finish to hold off any late challengers.
• Leslie McCarthy of Milton, MA claimed 3rd in 39:15, moving up five spots among women between the 5K and 8K marks with the 42nd-fastest women's split on that stretch.
• Sally Dupere (4th, 40:40) and Laura Zaunbrecher (5th, 40:50) were separated by just 10 seconds, but Dupere faded — dropping from 50th to 70th among women in the back half — while Zaunbrecher gained 11 spots in the women's field over the same stretch.

In a field of 455 finishers, the F40-44 race at the top was over early. Lanni Marchant, running 5:30 per mile through 87°F heat and an 18 mph wind, was never seriously threatened. She held 19th among all women through 5K and barely moved from there, a sign of a perfectly controlled effort rather than a late surge — just steady, relentless pace that no one in the age group could match.

Behind her, Caroline Rotich ran a composed race of her own. She slipped back slightly among the women's field through the middle miles but tightened things up with the 24th-fastest women's split on the 8K-to-finish stretch, finishing 1:10 back of Marchant and a comfortable 1:54 ahead of 3rd. Leslie McCarthy was the local bright spot, picking up ground in the middle portion of the race to secure the podium in 39:15.

The most interesting battle unfolded just off the podium. Laura Zaunbrecher and Sally Dupere were running nearly in lockstep through the first half — both sitting around 50th among women — but the race told two very different stories from there. Dupere faded to 70th among women by the finish; Zaunbrecher gained ground steadily and crossed 10 seconds ahead. In conditions this brutal, that kind of late composure is worth noting.
