M25-29: Sawe Surges to the Front and Never Looks Back

By the 8K checkpoint he'd moved to 1st among the men and never relinquished it, crossing in 27:42 at 4:27 per mile. On a day when Boston's heat and wind made fast times genuinely hard to come by, that kind of mid-race acceleration was the difference-maker.

Ebenyo's story is a cautionary tale of a hot pace held a touch too long. He sat 1st among the men through 5K, slipped to 2nd by 8K as Sawe surged past, and then dropped another spot in the closing stretch to finish 3rd in M25-29 at 27:55. Haileselassie, meanwhile, was quietly assembling the most impressive positional climb of the race — 8th at 5K, 4th by 8K, 4th at the line — finishing in 28:11 to claim 3rd in the age group. Teshome Mekonen (28:17) rounded out a tight top four, posting the 5th-fastest men's split on the 8K-to-finish stretch to hold off Alex Masai (28:29), who also moved up steadily from 10th at 5K to 8th at the line.

Behind the lead pack, the field spread out considerably. The gap from 5th to 9th was just 20 seconds, but 10th-place Eric Hamer — a local Boston runner — came home in 29:36, nearly a minute back of Masai. In conditions this brutal, every finisher in that 604-strong M25-29 field earned their result.
