B.A.A. 10K M70-74: Malovrh Wins It in the Heat

• Chuck Malovrh, 74, took the M70-74 title in 53:13 — an 8:34/mi average on a sweltering 87°F morning — more than three minutes clear of the field.
• Three runners finished within 32 seconds of each other for 2nd through 4th: Tom Giorgetti (56:21), Christopher Banfield (56:33), and Ernest Cook (56:53).
• John Keller ran the strongest finish of anyone in the top five, moving from 2,738th to 2,400th in the men's field between the 5K and the finish — the only top-five runner to gain ground across both measured splits.
• 33 men aged 70–74 finished the race in conditions that would test runners half their age.

Chuck Malovrh had the M70-74 race to himself from the gun. The 74-year-old from Rockport crossed in 53:13 at 8:34 per mile — a margin of 3:08 over second place that left no drama about the outcome. In 87°F heat with 18 mph winds and thick humidity, that kind of cushion isn't built by accident.

Behind him, the battle for the podium was genuinely tight. Tom Giorgetti of Bristol ran 56:21 to claim second, but Christopher Banfield of Woburn was only 12 seconds back in third at 56:33, and Ernest Cook of Brookline added just 20 more seconds to finish fourth in 56:53. Those three were separated by half a minute across 6.2 miles in brutal conditions — a real race within the race.

John Keller told a different story. He was deep in the men's field at the 5K mark but steadily reeled runners in over the back half, finishing fifth in 59:39. His late-race charge — gaining over 300 places in the men's field from the 5K to the finish — was the most visible momentum swing among the top finishers. The 9:36/mi average suggests he ran the second half with more in the tank than most.

The rest of the M70-74 field spread out considerably after the top five, with Joseph Kvilhaug (1:00:07) and Peter Quirk (1:00:43) rounding out the sub-hour-and-one-minute group. All 33 finishers deserve credit for getting to the line on a day when the conditions were anything but cooperative.
