B.A.A. 10K F65-69: Gadd Wins It in the Heat

• Michele Gadd, 67, of Brookline, wins the F65-69 age group in 53:00 (8:32/mi), more than 1:18 clear of runner-up Mj O'Donnell.
• Tightest battle of the day: Tanya Roy (56:08) and Eileen Casal (56:10) finished 4th and 5th just two seconds apart — with Jean Philip's 56:02 only six seconds ahead of them for 3rd.
• O'Donnell made the biggest move of the race, climbing from 898th among women at 5K all the way to 811th by 8K — a surge that secured her silver in the age group.
• Tanya Roy ran the strongest second half among the top five, advancing from 1,184th among women at 5K to 1,060th at the finish, a gain of 124 places across the women's field.

Michele Gadd ran away with the F65-69 title on a punishing afternoon — 87°F, 66% humidity, and an 18 mph wind off the Boston streets. Her 8:32/mi average was the class of the age group, and her margin of victory tells the story: 1:18 over Mj O'Donnell, and more than three minutes over third place. Gadd did fade slightly through the back half, drifting from 631st among women at 8K to 678th at the finish, but the gap she'd built was never in danger.

O'Donnell, 69, was the race's most compelling mover in the age group. She came through 5K nearly 300 places behind Gadd in the women's field, then hammered the 5K-to-8K segment — posting the 701st-fastest split among women on that stretch — to climb into clear second. She held that position all the way home, finishing in 54:18 at 8:44/mi.

The battle for the final podium spot was genuinely dramatic. Jean Philip edged Tanya Roy by just six seconds (56:02 to 56:08) for third, with Eileen Casal only two more seconds back in fifth at 56:10. Roy had actually been the stronger finisher of the pair, gaining 124 places among women from 5K to the line, while Casal faded 127 places over the same stretch — but Roy simply ran out of real estate to catch Philip.

Behind the top five, Christine Morris (57:19) and Louise Cummings (57:26) rounded out a competitive top seven, all finishing within the hour. Thirty-seven women completed the F65-69 race on a day that asked a great deal of everyone who toed the line.
