With 29°F temperatures and a 16 mph wind cutting through Huntsville, the F40-44 field at the Rocket City 5K delivered some sharp racing at the front. Kristen Toppin of Waterloo, Iowa set the tone immediately, crossing in 22:39 at a 7:17/mi clip — a pace that left no room for doubt. Her margin over the field wasn't a photo finish; it was a statement.

Behind Toppin, the real drama played out in a tight three-way contest for the podium. Perla Nunez of Madison, Alabama held 2nd in 24:45, with Holly Connell of Huntsville finishing 3rd in 25:17. Then came one of the sharpest gaps of the day: Elizabeth Jarding crossed in 25:18 — just one second behind Connell for 4th. Those two ran nearly the same finish time but Connell held the edge, making that battle for the final podium spot a genuine nail-biter. Savannah Crittenden completed the top five in 25:54.

Toppin's story carries an extra dimension: she also raced the 10K at this event, placing 9th among women in that field. Competing across two races in frigid conditions and still claiming the F40-44 5K title is a performance worth noting on its own.
