Rocket City 5K: Pierce Dominates M35-39 in the Cold

• Nathaniel Pierce won the M35-39 age group in 21:03 (6:47/mi) — a full 1:29 ahead of runner-up Patrick McQuaid.

Twenty-nine degrees, a 16 mph wind, and a clear Huntsville sky — not exactly ideal conditions for fast times. But Nathaniel Pierce didn't seem to notice. The 39-year-old Huntsville local ran the M35-39 field into the ground, crossing in 21:03 at a 6:47/mi clip that left everyone else chasing shadows. His margin of victory wasn't a photo finish — it was a statement, 1:29 clear of the field.

Patrick McQuaid made the closest attempt at challenging Pierce, finishing 2nd in 22:32 (7:15/mi). Behind him, Chris McCarthy (3rd, 23:03) and Erick Laitinen (4th, 23:22) kept things competitive in the middle of the podium, separated by just 19 seconds between them. Patrick Marcum rounded out the top five in 24:22, running 7:51/mi in the biting cold.

Further back, the race offered its own drama. Jordan Barecky (6th, 25:27) and Jacob Dupree (7th, 26:44) ran a solid mid-pack battle, while Weston Thomas and David Chew staged the closest finish of the day — Thomas crossing 8th in 27:46 and Chew following just 4 seconds later in 9th at 27:50. Sebastian Spencer (10th, 30:03) broke the 30-minute mark, while Zachary Tselis-Jackson (11th, 31:15) and John Coey (12th, 31:18) finished within 3 seconds of each other at the back of the main pack.
